Citizens Band Radio Service (CBRS) is an emerging wireless technology that is making its way into the built environment. In 2017, the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) completed the process to make CBRS available for commercial uses. This technology, which some believe has the potential to compliment 802.11 for network infrastructure in buildings, can also create a private mobile phone network for large organizations with expansive facilities. Since 2017, a number of early trials were initiated by major organizations including Nokia, Alphabet, Qualcomm and others. This session presents the current state of the technology, applications suited for indoors, the status of the trials and potential opportunities for building owners and operators.
