On April 15, 2020, the CBRS Alliance Technical Working Group (TWG) hosted an educational webinar for both members and non-members covering the key highlights of the CBRS Alliance’s newly published Release 3 Specifications for OnGo Network Services and Coexistence.

The specifications define how to deploy an LTE Private Network, LTE Neutral Host Network, or a Hybrid (Private and Neutral Host Network) using 3GPP Standard LTE technology and 5G NR in the 3.5 GHz band, and how coexistence is supported in these networks.

The session also covered how the specifications can help with multiple deployment scenarios and how to improve spectral efficiency in the CBRS band. The CBRS TWG provided a unique opportunity to get a comprehensive overview of the specifications, whether you’re planning a shared spectrum deployment or developing a new OnGo product.

Speakers included:

  • Alan Ewing, CBRS Alliance Executive Director
  • Dr. Gary Boudreau, System Architect at Ericsson, CBRS Alliance Technical Workgroup Chair
  • Iwajlo Angelow, Senior Standardization Specialist at, CBRS Alliance Radio Task Group Chair
  • Dr. Yi Hsuan, Wireless System Engineer at Google, CBRS Alliance Coexistence Task Group Chair
  • Dr. Masoud Olfat, Sr. Director, Technology Development at Federated Wireless, CBRS Alliance Network Services Task Group Chair

The Webinar speakers have provided responses to questions asked during the webinar below:

  • Given that radio chipsets are built around particular 3GPP releases, how much of n48 is actually defined in 3GPP Rel 15 – BW, CA combos, EN-DC combos, etc.?
    • n48 has been defined in Rel’16 time frame, it should be noted 3GPP bands are release independent. 3GPP specifications are updated after each 3GPP RAN (four times a year) to reflect completion of band combinations. The latest status can be found in 3GPP specification 38.101-1 and 38.101-3.
  • What is represented by the different shapes in the connected set graph (circles, triangles, hexagons)? What is the meaning of the different shapes?
    • Different shapes represent CBSDs in different networks. For the purpose of creating TDD configuration connected sets, the CxM will calculate coverage contours of all CBSDs and determine if an edge needs to be created between any pair of CBSDs, no matter they are in the same network or not.
  • Can NB-IOT and LTE-M TDD operate in CBRS band? If not, what is missing e.g. RAN4 B48 requirements?
    • NB-IoT and LTE-M are not supported in LTE Band 48 (lack of requirements), there was no request in 3GPP to support NB-IoT and LTE-M in Band 48. Network Services Group is reviewing whether a potential CBRS-related modification is required in the Network Architecture supporting NB-IOT or LTE-M, for future releases.
  • Will any preliminary PAL coexistence framework slated for Release 4 be pre-released before May 7th (auction short form deadline) to give bidders some idea of how PAL coexistence is likely to be handled by coexistence manager? For example, will PAL frame selection by PAL majority have any weighted influence over frame selection by the composite GAA and PAL majority?
    • PAL coexistence in CBRS Alliance will be built upon requirements defined in WinnForum. In this context CBRSA is working closely with the WinnForum to define a framework for PAL coexistence. In CBRSA the PAL coexistence work item is a Release 4 work item and the target completion date for Release 4 items is the end of the year. The coexistence task group members are actively working on this topic with an aim to define an initial framework by Q3 of this year.
